CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team battled back from a 2-1 deficit after doubles to tie the match at 4-4 but the No. 22 Engineers fell to No. 30 MIT 5-4 in a non-conference match at the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble. Both squads are now 2-1.
RPI's top doubles team of
Aiden Drover-Mattinen and
Andy Zhu salvaged a point with an 8-7 (8-6) victory at No. 1 after the first two matches were decided by 8-6 in favor of the host Engineers.
Drover-Mattinen, a sophomore who is ranked No. 3 in Division III, tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles and the teams split the next four decisions to knot things at 4-4. In what turned out to be the decisive match, MIT's Benji Grossman outlasted
Tasmay Shah 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 for a 5-4 victory.
In addition to Drover-Mattinen, other victors for RPI were
Abraham Yohannes at No. 3 and
Bryce Burnham at No. 5.
