CANTON, N.Y. – The No. 30 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team used wins in No. 1 singles through No. 5 singles as the catalyst for their victory over the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday afternoon. RPI improves to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in Liberty League play, while St. Lawrence falls to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Aidan Drover-Mattinen set the tone at No. 1 singles, as he was one of four Engineers that won their singles matchup in straight sets.
Abraham Yohannes,
Bryce Burnham, and
Jonathan McMillan won their matches in the same manner, taking points at No. 3 through No. 5 singles.
Andy Zhu won a tightly contested No. 2 singles matchup with St. Lawrence's Adam Heilbronner, as he scored a 7-6 (7), 6-7 (7), 10-2 win.
In doubles play, Drover-Mattinen and Zhu teamed up for a win at the No. 1 spot, taking an 8-5 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Yohannes and
Igor Visnevskij pulled through, edging Heilbronner and Broderick Pinto 8-7 (6) for a win.
The Engineers return to action next Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Hobart for Liberty League play.
