LATHAM, N.Y. - Max Safanov had a pair of victories and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team overcame two losses in doubles - all three went to tiebreaks - in defeating The College of New Jersey 5-4 in a non-league match at Tri-City Fitness. 

A sophomore, Safanov teamed with classmate Bryce Burnham to win at No. 3 doubles, salvaging a point after the Lions closed out the first two matches. 

Abraham Yohannes tied the match with a win at No. 3 singles and freshman Andy Zhu made it 3-2 for the Engineers by capturing No. 2 singles. Both matches ended in straight sets. A 6-3, 6-3 triumph by Jonathan McMillan at No. 5 pulled RPI to within one of clinching, which Safanov did at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4. 

TCNJ won the last two matches completed, No. 1 and No. 4 - both in three sets, including a tiebreak in the third at No. 1.
