TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Lauren McCarthy scored a pair of goals and assisted another as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team defeated St. John Fisher by a final score of 5-0 at Harkness Field Sunday afternoon. RPI has now won two in a row, moving to 2-5 overall while St. John Fisher fell to 1-5 overall.
The Engineers wasted no time getting on the board, as McCarthy found
Julie Thomas out in front of the net just 37 seconds into the game to give RPI the 1-0 lead. That led to a three-goal first quarter, as McCarthy scored at the 8:17 mark, spinning around a defender and scoring from long distance to take a 2-0 lead.
Nina Caprio supplied the third goal at the 11:31 mark of the first, finishing a one-touch pass from
Dani Samuelson as the Engineers extended their lead to 3-0. McCarthy then added her second goal less than two minutes into the second quarter on an assist from
Ria Patel from in close to move it to 4-0.
The Engineers maintained the 4-0 through halftime and the third quarter, scoring their final goal in the fourth frame. Off a corner, Caprio found
Molly Atkinson to her left as she took a shot and scored her first collegiate goal. RPI held down the fort, not allowing a single shot in the final 15 minutes of play.
Overall, RPI only allowed six shots on the game, with goalie
Tess Garchinsky coming up with two saves over 45 minutes in the cage. RPI collected 18 shots with 11 on frame. Emma Cooper tallied four of St. John Fisher's six total shots, putting two on net. Both Sophia Trozzi and Senja Matson each made three saves in net for St. John Fisher.
RPI returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. when they play host to Eastern Connecticut State on Harkness Field.
