GENEVA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team made some noise on the first day of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at William & Smith on Saturday, as the Engineers advanced three of four singles players, and a doubles squad into Sundays Round of 16.
RPI was led by
Nicole Ridenour and
Lorna Flores Gonzalez, as they came into the tournament at the top seeded doubles pairing. The duo teamed up for a pair of doubles victories by final scores of 8-0 and 8-5 to move into the doubles quarterfinals. They first defeated Natalie Pipes and Rory Tobin from Geneseo before defeating Priyanka Challapalli and Hannah Walpole from Hamilton College. They will square off against Ariane and Yvette Karera in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Individually, Ridenour and Flores both went undefeated in singles play, with the No. 4 overall seed in Ridenour coming out with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ava Deguzman from Baruch. Then she defeated Ananya Krishnan from Vassar 6-1, 6-2 to advance to Sunday's Round of 16. Florez Gonzalez did the same, topping Elyse Duley from Vassar 7-6 (5), 6-1 before defeating Alys Pop from Ithaca by a closely contested 6-1, 6-7 (14), 14-12 final.
Also making it through to the Round of 16 in singles play was freshman
Prisha Rapur, who took two straight set wins. Rapur defeated Beilynn Geiss of Skidmore 6-4, 7-5 before taking down Sofie Shen from Vassar 6-4, 6-3. She will face Taylor Crain in the Round of 16 on Sunday.
Play will continue on Sunday at 8:30 a.m., beginning with singles play.
