TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore goaltender
Tess Garchinsky made 13 saves in net as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team fell just short against the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets by a 2-1 final score at Harkness Field Saturday afternoon.
Both sides played scoreless through the first half, with Garchinsky holding the Yellow Jackets with seven saves in the first 30 minutes.
At the 33:57 mark of the third quarter, Zoe Conomikes scored her first of two goals of the day on a one-timer in front, putting Rochester ahead 1-0. She tallied her second exactly seven minutes later on an assist from Mara Happard as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead.
Garchinsky made five more saves in the third quarter, as the Engineers battled through the fourth quarter. RPI broke through with a goal as
Ria Patel knocked home a rebound off a shot from
Abby Peterson to pull the Engineers back within a goal.
RPI charged ahead, and had a couple opportunities in the final minute – including a corner after time had expired but could not find the back of the net.
The Engineers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. when they travel to New Paltz in non-conference action.
