TROY, N.Y.- Sophia Brown of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team scored the game-winning goal 52 seconds into the second overtime period to give RPI a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence this afternoon on Harkness Field.
Brown's score capped an afternoon in which RPI registered a 31-5 shot advantage over the visiting Saints.
Lauren McCarthy and Dani Samuelson also provided goals for RPI in the win.
After St. Lawrence struck in the opening 120 seconds of the game, McCarthy responded for the Engineers three minutes later to tie things at 1-1.
The deadlock remained in place through halftime, until the Saints re-took the lead with five minutes remaining in the third period.
Just like the first half, the Engineers would formulate an answer quick, as Samuelson tipped in a feed from Ria Patel in the closing moments of the quarter to level the score at 2-2 going into the fourth.
Neither side could break through across the fourth quarter and 10-minute overtime, setting up the Brown walk-off in the second extra session.
The Engineers will next welcome Ithaca to Harkness Field for a 4:00 pm meeting on Friday.
