TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team battled New Paltz to a 3-2 result tonight on Harkness Field. The visiting Hawks scored the go-ahead goal with three minutes remaining in the third quarter to steal the non-conference win.
Sophia Brown logged her second consecutive two-goal effort for the Engineers.
Brown gave RPI a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game when she knocked home a loose ball at doorstep of the Hawks goal.
New Paltz would own the next two scores, as Amanda Quenneville and Rachel Tama produced first half goals to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead at the break.Â
Brown tied things up for the Engineers early in the third quarter when she tipped in a sequence that featured Rachel Banister and Ria Patel.
Patel won space on the end line before centering a pass to Banister in the middle of the arc. Banister would make the extra pass to Brown on the far post to move the action to 2-2.Â
Just like the first half, the Hawks would not take long to respond to an RPI score. Three minutes after Brown's equalizer, Tama would find the back of the net for the second time on the night to give New Paltz its ninth win in 10 games this fall.
Tess Garchinsky made seven saves in goal for RPI.
The Engineers will now look ahead to the start of Liberty League play, beginning with Saturday's 12:00 pm contest at Skidmore.
