Engineers Go to OT at Mercyhurst

ERIE, PA - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team bested Mercyhurst in a shootout tonight following a 3-3 result with the host Lakers.

Jeremie Payant and John Beaton scored in the first period for RPI and Dovar Tinling netted a game-tying goal late in the third period to force the overtime.

Will Gilson and Elliott McDermott had two assists apiece, as the defenders provided the help on both of RPI's goals in the opening frame.

Payant struck with six minutes elapsed in the first, however the goal was quickly answered by Mercyhurst. Beaton would follow at 15:58 to send the Engineers into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.

The Lakers owned both tallies in the second, giving the hosts a 3-2 advantage after two periods. Tinling scored on a power play with five minutes remaining to necessitate the extra session.

McDermott, Hotson, and Jake Gagnon each put a shot on goal in the overtime, but the score would stay deadlocked after the five-minutes of three-on-three play.

Hotson finished with one assist on the night and also registered the only successful attempt of the shootout session. Arvils Bergmanis contributed one assist as well. Jimmy Goffredo and Jack Agnew were each active defensively with four blocked shots apiece.

Looking forward, the two sides will close the weekend with a 4:00 pm tilt tomorrow afternoon.
