TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team suffered a 3-2 setback against SUNY Geneseo this evening at Harkness Field.
Abby Peterson and
Ria Patel scored one goal each for RPI, while
Lauren McCarthy provided an assist to the Engineer attack.
Peterson opened the scoring with a clean strike from the top of the zone on a corner attempt with a little more than two minutes elapsed in the first quarter. McCarthy started the corner sequence with a perfect feed to Peterson to propel the Engineers ahead early.
The Engineers didn't wait long to add to their advantage, as
Ria Patel would find the back of the net five minutes after Peterson's score to move RPI ahead 2-0.
Ella Greico scored her first goal of the match six minutes before halftime to move Geneseo back within one at intermission. The Knights would carry their momentum through the break as Greico would strike again 68 seconds into the third quarter to level the action at 2-2.
The two squads played a balanced remainder of the third frame before Geneseo scored the go-ahead goal with 12:21 remaining. Grace Olczak deposited home a pass from Sam Lewis to put the Knights on top for good.
The Engineers are back at Harkness Field on Sunday for a 1:00 pm non-conference meeting against Hartwick.
