Field Hockey Comes Back to Defeat Hartwick 5-3

TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team came from behind to defeat Hartwick 5-3 this afternoon. The Engineer's trailed 2-1 before netting four of the final five goals to secure their first victory of the fall.

Abby Peterson and Lauren McCarthy topped the Engineers with two goals apiece, while Sophia Brown registered one score on the day. McCarthy, Peterson, and Ria Patel provided one assist as well to the RPI attack.

McCarthy got RPI on the board in the first 50 seconds of the match, as she maneuvered her way through the middle of the field before firing off an unassisted strike.

After Hartwick converted a penalty stroke two minutes later, the Engineer's closed out the first quarter scoring with Peterson finishing off a corner attempt started by McCarthy. 

Trailing 2-1, the Hawks jumped back ahead with a pair of goals within 87 seconds of each other in the second quarter, however Peterson was able to level the action with a successful penalty opportunity with 35 ticks before the half.

The 3-3 margin held until the middle stages of the fourth quarter when Patel found Brown for RPI's go-ahead score with 8:35 remaining. McCarthy and Peterson worked together to add an insurance score for the Engineers with two and half minutes left in the match.

Dani Hand had one goal and one assist for Hartwick. Ashley Tricarico scored as well in the loss for the Hawks.

The Engineers will look ahead to Tuesday's road matchup at Hamilton. The action is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm in Clinton, N.Y.
