ALBANY, NY- Union College scored with 1:04 remaining in overtime to earn a 3-2 win over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team tonight in the 12th meeting of the Capital District Mayor's Cup Classic.
Nate Hanley netted the unassisted game-winner to give the Garnet Chargers the victory in front of 7,300 fans inside the MVP Arena in downtown Albany.
Jack Brackett and Jeremie Payant provided goals for the Engineers tonight, with Brackett starting the scoring at 8:05 in the first period courtesy of assists from Jake Gagnon and Elliott McDermott.
Union would respond to the Brackett strike with a score by Josh Nixon three minutes later, creating a 1-1 margin that lasted until the early moments of the third when Nixon netted his second of the game to put the Garnet Chargers up one.
Payant would then send the arena into a frenzy as he tipped in a Hotson attempt with 13 minutes to play, setting up a final flurry of RPI attacks that featured eight critical saves from Union goalkeeper Kyle Chauvette.
The overtime session saw the Garnet Chargers put three shots on goal before Hanley's walk-off score. The Engineers had one shot on goal in the extra frame.
Looking ahead, RPI is slated to return to ECAC play with a 7pm meeting with Brown on Friday night in Houston Field House.
