TROY, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's swimming and diving team earned a 173–96 dual meet victory over SUNY Oneonta today at Robison Pool, sweeping first-place finishes in 13 of 14 swimming events.
Joshua Collins set the tone in the distance events, cruising to a win in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:24.15. He was followed closely by teammate
Connor Freeze, who finished second in the 1000 before later capturing first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.95. Samuel Ciegler turned in a strong individual performance as well, touching first in the 200 freestyle (1:46.68) and the 400 individual medley (4:15.90).
Benjamin Shedwick picked up his first collegiate win in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 56.13 seconds.
Peter Meehan dominated the breaststroke events, placing first in both the 100 (1:02.04) and 200 (2:18.41).
Hayden Dinkin posted a winning time of 1:59.80 in the 200 butterfly, and
Ethan Young sprinted to victory in the 50 freestyle at 22.53 seconds.
Jason Weller paced the field in the 100 freestyle, winning in 48.12 seconds. Weller also played a key role in both of RPI's relay wins. He swam the opening leg of the 400-yard medley relay, which placed first in 3:37.02 alongside teammates
Tyler Kim,
Hayden Dinkin, and
Beckham Palmer.
Weller would also anchor the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:17.51), combining with Dinkin,
Rittivuth Chea, and Palmer to close out the competition. Chea also claimed an individual win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.83, rounding out a balanced showing across strokes for the Engineers. On the diving boards,
Ian Evans placed third in the 1-meter (122.50) and second in the 3-meter event with a score of 145.90.
The Engineers return to competition next Saturday when they welcome Ithaca at Robison Pool for a 2:00 pm dual meet.
