TROY, NY — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's swimming and diving team competed in a dual meet this afternoon against Liberty League rival Ithaca College, ultimately falling 163-133 in a competitive showdown that featured a number of strong individual and relay performances for the Engineers.
Jason Weller delivered a standout day in the backstroke events, sweeping both distances with a time of 51.73 seconds in the 100 and 1:56.12 in the 200. He was also part of two second-place relay efforts, swimming the opening leg of both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
In the 200 medley relay, Weller was joined by
Ethan Young,
Tyler Kim, and
Beckham Palmer, as the quartet clocked a time of 1:37.99. Later in the meet, Weller swam the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle relay, teaming up with Philippe Diaz, Palmer, and
John Hobden to finish in 3:14.03.
Kim also impressed with a pair of first-place finishes in the individual events, winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.73 and the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.32. He added a third-place showing in the 200 freestyle earlier in the meet.
Distance freestyler Samuel Ciegler was a key contributor for the Engineers, opening the meet with a victory in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:13.73 before adding runner-up finishes in both the 500 freestyle and 200 IM.
Hayden Dinkin led the way in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall first in 1:57.30 and later earning second place in the 100 fly. In the breaststroke events,
Peter Meehan continued his consistency with a win in the 100-yard distance, posting a time of 1:00.15.
RPI continues its dual meet schedule next Saturday against Vassar in Poughkeepsie.
