Engineers Dispatches Union in Overtime

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team earned a thrilling 2–1 overtime victory over Union College on Friday afternoon at Houston Field House, powered by a two-goal performance from Charlotte Wensley and a 31-save outing from Reese Keating.

After a scoreless opening period, Union broke through midway through the second on a goal from Maddie Leaney, but the Engineers continued to press offensively. Naomi Forand nearly equalized moments later with a shot off the post, setting the tone for a relentless RPI push through the final two frames.

RPI finally broke through at 9:10 of the third when Wensley evened the score, finishing a feed from Forand and Kami O'Brien from nearly behind the net to make it 1–1. The goal shifted momentum firmly in Rensselaer's favor, as the Engineers outshot the Garnet Chargers 9–6 in the period and limited Union's power play to just one shot on goal.

Wensley delivered again with less than a minute remaining in the three-on-three sessions to lift the Engineers to their second win of the season. Her sixth goal of the year capped an end-to-end rush in which she forced a turnover in the Union attacking zone, drove across the neutral zone, and fired a high wrist shot that slipped inside the upper left corner for the sudden-death game-winner.

Keating was sharp in net from start to finish, stopping all 22 shots she faced after the opening goal, including several key saves during a five-minute Union power play in the second period. RPI finished with 30 shots on goal.

Leaney scored the lone goal for Union, assisted by Jill Willis and Karianne Engelbert, before Wensley's late heroics sealed the overtime victory.

The two sides will finish their home-and-home series tomorrow afternoon in M&T Bank Arena in Schenectady.
