GENESEO, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team opened the 2025 season on the road at Geneseo on Friday, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Knights at College Stadium.
Geneseo struck first late in the opening quarter when Ava Harman set up Shannon Cunningham for a goal with just over 30 seconds remaining in the frame. Harman added a tally of her own early in the fourth quarter, providing insurance on a shot that found the back of the cage in the 49th minute.
RPI had several opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the opening half, including a flurry of five penalty corners in a three-minute span during the second quarter.
Ella Pasquarelli registered a game-high three shots, while
Grace Johnson and
Kylie Secker also forced saves from Geneseo goalkeeper Bridget Schafer, who turned away all five attempts she faced.
Tess Garchinsky made 10 saves for the Engineers, including four in the opening quarter and three more in the final 15 minutes of play. The Knights finished with a narrow edge in shots (12-7) and penalty corners (10-9) on the night.
RPI will flip around to face Hartwick tomorrow at 2:00 pm in Oneonta.
