ONEONTA, N.Y. – Sophia Brown scored the game-winning goal with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium.
With the score tied 2-2 late in the fourth quarter, Brown capitalized on a well-placed assist from Katie Galgay, depositing the go-ahead tally to send the Engineers home with the win. Galgay had put the Engineers in scoring position after sprinting past several Hawks defenders along the far sideline.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second, RPI pulled even early in the third on a penalty stroke goal from Khushi Saini. Hartwick briefly regained the lead at 2-1 midway through the frame, however the Engineers responded less than 90 seconds later when Grace Johnson found the back of the cage off a feed from Ria Patel.
RPI held a commanding 19-10 edge in total shots and earned 13 penalty corners to the Hawks' seven. Tess Garchinsky earned the win in goal, making four saves.
The Engineers will next face Hamilton in their home-opener on Tuesday night. The action is set to start at 6:00 pm on Harkness Field.
