Field Hockey Hosts Hamilton in Home-Opener

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team suffered a 5-1 defeat versus Hamilton College in non-conference action tonight at Harkness Field.

Sophia Brown deposited the lone goal of the evening for the Engineers, as she struck in the middle of the third quarter to get RPI on the board.

Hamilton had opened the scoring less than two minutes in and quickly built a multi-goal lead. The Continentals struck twice in the first quarter and added a third in the closing minutes of the second to carry a 3-0 advantage into halftime. Goals from Becky Felker and Lilly Truchon came early, followed by a marker from Brighton McMahon late in the second.

The visitors added to their lead in the third quarter with a tally from Alden Duserick, but RPI responded just 53 seconds later. Capitalizing off sustained pressure, Brown found the back of the cage for her second goal in as many days to get the Engineers on the board.

RPI continued to press and finished with 10 penalty corners, including six in the final frame, but couldn't crack the Hamilton defense again. The Continentals capped the scoring with a late fourth-quarter goal by Evelyn Butorac.

Olivia Brovak finished with five saves in the second half for RPI, while Tess Garchinsky made one stop in the opening 30 minutes. Brown led the offense with a goal on two shots, and Ria Patel recorded a team-high three attempts.

RPI next takes the field with a road contest at VTSU Castleton next Wednesday at 4 pm.
