CASTLETON, VT – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team scored twice in the second half to erase a one-goal deficit and earn a 3-2 non-league win over Vermont State University Castleton at Dave Wolk Stadium this afternoon.
After falling behind 1-0 in the third minute, the Engineers quickly responded behind their corner unit.
Kennedy Campbell got RPI on the board at 13:04, scoring off a set piece with help from an assist by
Khushi Saini. The Spartans regained the lead in the 28th minute, converting a counterattack opportunity to carry a 2-1 edge into halftime.
The Engineers regrouped after the break. Just over four minutes into the third quarter, Saini pulled the Engineers even once again, burying a penalty stroke goal, her second of the season, to make it 2-2.
Grace Johnson delivered the game-winner with 9:20 left in the fourth quarter, finishing from close range for her second goal of the year.
Tess Garchinsky made five saves in the win, including three key stops in the second half to keep the Engineers within range. RPI held a 12-9 advantage in total shots (9-7 on goal) and earned 12 penalty corners compared to seven for Castleton. Johnson led the Engineers with five shots, including three on target.
RPI returns home to welcome Utica to Harkness Field for a 12 pm tilt on Saturday.
