NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team opened the fall dual match season with a commanding 6–1 victory over Merrimack College today. The Engineers set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches before claiming five of the six singles contests.
In doubles action, the top duo of
Anushka Jaiswal and
Nicole Ridenour powered past Merrimack's Maria Estinvil and Jordan Phillips with a 6–4 win on the first doubles line. The No. 2 tandem of
Kaaviya Kannan and
Juliette Ceas matched that effort with a 6–3 triumph over Kiana Thompson and Pia Vargas-Lopez. Meanwhile,
Kayla Wheeler and
Taylor Chandler completed the sweep with a 6–3 decision over Selasie Senanu and Giula Martins Cavalcante.
The Engineers continued to roll in singles play, with
Gauri Muliyil leading the charge. She dominated her opponent in second singles, defeating Maria Estinvil by a convincing 6–1, 6–1 triumph.
Victoria Sarabosing also made quick work of her match, recording a 6–1, 6–2 victory over Selasie Senanu, while
Prisha Rapur secured another straight-set win for the Engineers by downing Giula Martins Cavalcante 7–5, 6–4.
RPI's most dramatic points came in third and fourth singles matchups, where
Kayla Wheeler and
Juliette Ceas both rallied after dropping the first set to comeback and win a decided frame by a 10-8 margin.
RPI will look ahead to the ITA Northeast Regional, which is set to take place in Saratoga Springs next weekend.
