Men's Hockey Controls Brown for ECAC Victory

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's ice hockey team earned a strong 4–1 ECAC Hockey victory over Brown University tonight inside Houston Field House.

The Engineers scored in all three periods and received a steady effort in goal from Nate Krawchuk, who turned aside 30 shots for his third win of the season.

RPI opened the scoring at 8:31 of the first period on the power play when Rainers Rullers buried his fifth goal of the season. Dovar Tinling and Thomas Klassek set up the tally, working the puck high to low before Rullers finished from the slot to give the Engineers a 1–0 lead.

The Engineers doubled the advantage early in the second period as Brad McNeil notched his first goal of the year two minutes into the stanza. McNeil snapped home an even-strength chance off a feed from Ian Scherzer, with the goal ultimately standing as the game-winner. Brown would answer just 22 seconds later to cut the deficit in half, but RPI carried a 2–1 edge into the second intermission.

RPI added breathing room midway through the third when defenseman Trevor Russell jumped into the play and finished a feed from Rullers and Luciano Wilson at 7:01, pushing the lead to 3–1. The Engineers sealed the victory late as captain Tyler Wallace scored into an empty net with two minutes remaining, assisted by Jagger Tapper, to account for the 4–1 final.

RPI will look to take this momentum into next weekend's Mayor's Cup, which features RPI taking on Union on Saturday evening at the MVP Arena in Downton Albany.
