TROY, NY — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team opened its 2026 season with a hard-fought 4-3 setback against Geneseo on this afternoon at Harkness Field. The Engineers struck twice in the opening five minutes and mounted a late fourth-quarter push, but the Knights held on for the one-goal victory.
RPI wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as
Sophia Brown found the back of the cage just 31 seconds into the contest to give the Engineers an early 1-0 advantage. Geneseo answered at the 2:51 mark when Ella Greico converted a feed from Aubree Wenner to even the game at 1-1.
Brown struck again at 4:44, this time finishing a setup from
Kylie Secker to put RPI back in front, 2-1. The two-goal effort highlighted a strong opening quarter for Brown and helped the Engineers carry the lead into the second period.
RPI generated several chances to extend its advantage in the second quarter.
Katie Galgay and
Ria Patel each forced saves from Geneseo goalkeeper Bridget Schafer, while the Engineers earned six penalty corners during the period. RPI's best opportunity came at 24:24, when
Emily Dubord was awarded a penalty stroke, but Schafer came up with the save to keep the Knights within one.
Less than a minute later, Geneseo capitalized at the opposite end of the field. Lauren Rey scored off an assist from Ava Harman at 25:01 to pull the Knights even at 2-2, sending the teams into halftime tied.
Geneseo took its first lead of the afternoon early in the third quarter. After earning a penalty corner, Wenner finished a setup from Harman at 33:20 to put the visitors ahead 3-2. RPI continued to apply pressure, including a stretch of four penalty corners in less than a minute late in the quarter, but the Knights' defense kept the Engineers off the scoreboard.
Harman then extended the Geneseo advantage with an unassisted goal at 43:52, giving the Knights a 4-2 lead entering the final period.
RPI continued to press throughout the fourth quarter. Dubord generated three attempts during the period, while Brown put another shot on goal as the Engineers searched for a way back into the contest. Their pressure was rewarded at 56:47 when
Lindsay Dunbar scored to cut the deficit to 4-3 with just over three minutes remaining. The Engineers continued their push down the stretch, but Geneseo held on for the victory.
Brown led the Rensselaer attack with two goals on five shots, including three attempts on target. Dubord recorded four shots, while Galgay, Patel and
Ella Pasquarelli added two attempts apiece. Dunbar scored on her lone shot of the afternoon, and Secker registered RPI's only assist.
The Engineers finished with a commanding 15-8 advantage in penalty corners, including six in the second quarter and four in the third. Geneseo held a narrow 18-17 edge in total shots and an 11-10 advantage in shots on goal.
Olivia Brovak made seven saves for RPI, while Schafer also stopped seven shots for the Knights.
