ERIE, Pa. - The #9 Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team scored two goals in the first and tallied two unanswered in the third period to defeat Rensselaer, 4-1, in non-conference action on Saturday. The Lakers improve to 3-1 overall while the Engineers drop to 1-4 on the season.
After scoring the game-winner the previous night, senior Hayley McMeekin picked up right where she left off in Saturday's afternoon tilt, scoring at 6:42 and 9:30 of the first period to give Mercyhurst an early 2-0 lead.
The Engineers battled back at the 15:42 mark as
Kendra Dunlop scored on the power play off assists by
Allysen Weidner and
Laura Gersten.
Neither team found the back of the net in the middle stanza and Mercyhurst added a tally by Kelley Steadman at 17:30 for the two-goal advantage. Just 16 seconds later, with the Rensselaer goalie pulled, Ashley Cockell scored an empty-netter for the 4-1 lead.
In goal, Hillary Patterden picked up her second victory in as many nights making 29 saves.
Sonja van der Bliek stopped 24 shots in the loss for RPI.
The Engineers return to action next weekend when they host Niagara on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm), respectively, at the Houston Field House.
