ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Jimmy Robertson (Yonkers, NY/Iona Prep.) threw two touchdown passes to Patrick McCarthy (Strafford, NH/Spaulding) and Nick Costa  (Yonkers, NY/Iona Prep.) ran 1-yard for another score as visiting Rensselaer defeated the University of Rochester, 27-17, at Edwin Fauver Stadium in a Liberty League matchup.

Robertson completed 20 of 34 passes for 252 yards. He was not intercepted or sacked. McCarthy caught nine passes for 115 yards and the two TDs. Costa rushed for a net of 68 yards on 24 carries.

RPI rushed for 133 yards and passed for 252 more. The Engineers also got field goals of 22 and 26 yards from Peter Nilson (Appleton, WI/Kimberly). RPI improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League.

For Rochester, Clarence Onyiriuka scored on a five-yard run and Mike Sondericker scored on a 32-yard run. Zach White-Stellato kicked a 29-yard field goal.

The Yellowjackets are 1-3 overall, 1-1 in the Liberty League. Rochester rushed for 96 yards (Sondericker led with 78 yards on 10 carries) and passed for 242 more. Braezen Subick completed 24 of 34 throws. He was intercepted twice and sacked twice.

Onyiriuka's five-yard run with 11:47 left in the second quarter pushed Rochester ahead, 7-3. It completed a 13-play, 90-yard drive. RPI answered with a hurry-up offense, driving 65 yards in 10 plays for a 10-7 lead with 8:38 left in the half. Robertson threw a 23-yard TD pass to McCarthy on fourth-and-six.

Rochester went back in front, 14-10 with 2:09 to go, when Sondericker made a weaving 32-yard run down the left side for a touchdown to end a six-play, 54-yard drive. RPI returned to the hurry-up and drove 54 yards in 10 plays, ending with Nilson's 26-yard field goal to pull within 14-13 with seven seconds left in the half.

The Engineers took the lead for good on their first drive in the third quarter. Robertson threw 15 yards to Eren Savasli, 23 yards to McCarthy, and 17 more to Savasli, moving the ball down to the five. Costa gained four, then dove over from the one. After White-Stellato's field goal got Rochester within 20-17 with 3:31 left in the third, RPI drove 61 yards in 10 plays, ending with Robertson's 19-yard TD pass to McCarthy for a 27-17 edge six seconds into the final quarter.

RPI's defense made three key plays in the final quarter. After RPI's touchdown, Rochester drove to the seven. Subick threw into the end zone where Mike Coolbaugh had gotten open. RPI's Joe Albano (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional) dashed over and deflected the ball away on third down. On fourth down, Khaly Merot (New Windsor, NY/White Plains) blocked a 24-yard field goal attempt by White-Stellato.

On Rochester's next possession, the Yellowjackets drove down to the 10.  On fourth-and-eight, Subick's pass for Tom Malczewski in the end zone was intercepted by Justin Foglia (Watervliet, NY/Catholic Central). 

For Rochester, Coolbaugh caught eight passes for 59 yards and Ingoldsby had seven catches for 76 yards. Defensively, Sean Simpson had three primary tackles and eight assists. Matt Stack had four primaries and five assists.

Tim Acker (Arlington, WA/Arlington) led RPI's defense with six solos and nine assists. Foglia was in on six tackles, had one tackle for loss, one forced fumble, and the interception.
