ONEONTA, N.Y. — Senior Jillian Hughes (Brownsville, VT) scored with just 2:04 left in the game to break a 0-0 tie and hand the Hartwick College field hockey team a 1-0 win over visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The victory is the first for the Hawks, who are now 1-2. RPI slips to 2-2.

The Hawks' game-winning tally started near midfield where sophomore Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY) played the ball through to Hughes, who broke in alone on Rensselaer goalkeeper Briana Earle (Baldwinsville, NY). Hughes eluded the oncoming Earle and calmly buried her shot between two Red Hawks for the goal.

The homestanding Hawks saw keeper Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY) stop nine shots. She stopped a flurry of chances with just over 17 minutes left on four Red Hawks shots right in a row, including three by forward Lisa Pak (Meuthen, MA). Defender Joanna Aliprando (Basking Ridge, NJ) picked up two defensive saves in the match for RPI.

Rensselaer finished the game with an 11-6 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. However,

Hartwick is on the road in their next game at St. Lawrence on Saturday at 1pm.  RPI next plays host to Cortland on Saturday at 2pm.
