Jessica Corrigan had two goals and two others had a goal and an assist but it was not enough as the Rensselaer field hockey team fell at Rochester, 7-5, in a Liberty League contest. Christi Bottcher scored twice in the last eight minutes to snap a 5-5 for U of R.
The Yellowjackets won their fourth in a row and took sole control of fourth place in the Liberty League standings. Rochester is 7-5 overall, 3-2 in the Liberty League.
RPI (2-10 overall, 1-4 Liberty League) fought back from a 5-1 deficit. The Engineers got two goals from Corrigan and single tallies from
Alissa Peterson and
Joanna Aliprando to cap the comeback.
Sandy Turnbull scored for RPI as well.
Bottcher finished with three goals and one assist. Shayna McKie scored two goals for the Yellowjackets. Amanda Case had one goal and two assists. Liz Fletcher scored a solo goal.
Danielle Pearson made eight saves in the Rochester goal and allowed five scores.
Sarah Burcher played the first 19:17 for RPI. She had three saves and four goals-against.
Briana Earle played the final 50:43, making two saves and giving up three scores.
RPI held an 18-11 advantage in shots (14-7 in the second half). Each team had 11 penalty corners.
Case scored off a penalty corner just 54 seconds into the game. Fletcher scored at 4:18 after taking the ball from a defender. Turnbull completed a dazzling 40-yard breakaway at 7:16 by sliding the ball under Pearson. McKie (8:59) and Bottcher (13:01) restored the Rochester lead to 4-1. Bottcher set up McKie for a 5-1 edge at 30:18, but Corrigan's first of the afternoon at 31:03 kept the Engineers in the hunt.
RPI controlled play in the second half. Peterson (43:01) and Corrigan (48:20) scored five minutes apart. RPI finally drew even when Aliprando finished off a scramble in the Yellowjacket goalmouth at 60:14.
Bottcher's gamewinner at 62:20 came after she secured a penalty corner that bounced off several sticks. She drove it home from the top of the circle. She scored an insurance goal at 66:27, taking a penalty corner from Case, sidestepping a defender, and whistling a shot into the net.
