TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) recorded two goals and assisted on the overtime winner as the 16th-ranked Stevens field hockey team defeated Rensselaer, 3-2, in overtime, this afternoon at Harkness Field. With the win the Ducks improve to 12-3, while the Engineers fall to 3-11.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the second, Rensselaer junior Jessica Corrigan (South Burlington, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon) swatted in the go-ahead goal at the 60:03 mark. Senior Shaina Feldman (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) sent a pass that skipped across the goal mouth for Corrigan who knocked it in out of the air.

With less than a minute to play in regulation Chavez picked up a rebound near the right post and pushed it past Rensselaer sophomore netminder Briana Earle (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime.

Just 2:53 into the extra frame, Chavez led a 2-on-0 break and drew pressure from Earle, before sending the ball across to a wide open Lauren Griggs (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) for the game-winning tally.

The contest was scoreless until 27:21 of the first half, when Chavez carried in from 30 yards out and slid a shot through a screen and past Earle for a 1-0 Ducks advantage. Stevens took the lead into the half, while outshooting the Engineers 7-4 in the opening frame.

Rensselaer delivered the equalizing goal at the 39-minute mark. Senior Margaret Chowaniec (Burlington, CT/Lewis Mills) set up freshman Hannah Kaplan (Danbury, CT/Danbury) for her first collegiate goal.

Stevens junior goaltender Ellyn Griggs (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) earned the win, making three saves, while Earle finished with five stops.

The Engineers return to action on Tuesday, when they host Utica at Harkness Field (5pm). Stevens hosts Elmira on Saturday afternoon (12pm).
