MEDFORD, Mass. - Nine student-athletes and two relays finished in the top three as the Rensselaer men's track & field team gained 141 points on its way to winning the season opening, multi-divisional Snowflake Classic at Tufts University. The Engineers posted three victories in defeating 12 other programs. On the women's side, RPI posted 77.50 points to place fourth of 16 programs.
Among Rensselaer's top performers was the 4x400 team of
Kyle Barden (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill),
Garrett Harms (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport),
Tim Jackson (Gettysburg, PA / North Stafford) and
Nick Jones (West Covina, CA), which won the event in a time of 3:38.05. Jackson and Barden also finished second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash.
Junior
Mike Cipollone (Swan Point, MD/McDonough) captured the high jump, classmate
Justin Metzger (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) took the pole vault and sophomore
Sean Miller (Mt. Vernon, NY/Iona Prep) had a pair of third place finishes (long jump & triple jump).
The women's team had six top three finishes, including a second place effort by the 4x400 relay team of
Kristiina Baker (Bolton, MA/Nashoba Regional),
Cassie Fortini (Sandown, NH/Timberlane),
Rachel Guillot (Morrisville, VT/Peoples Academy) and
Sarah Hinz (Swanzey, NH/Monadnock). Fortini also finished third in the 400-meter dash.
