RPI Hosts Annual Capital District Classic

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team produced a dominant set of performances at today's Capital District Classic on Harkness Track, stacking event wins and a deep collection of top-eight finishes across the sprints, middle distance, distance events, hurdles, relays, jumps, and throws.

RPI's sprinters set the tone right away in the 100-meter dash, led by Cam Caso who finished second in 10.84 seconds, while Jack Catelotti placed third in 11.11. The Engineers added more points in the same race as Alex Flynn took sixth in 11.26 and Gabe Sicurella tied for eighth at 11.29. RPI followed with a strong showing in the 200, where the Engineers swept the top two spots as Caso won the event in 22.03 and Donovan Myrick finished second in 22.15, with Catelotti adding a third-place result in 22.51. RPI continued to stack scoring finishes as Rafael Steiner placed fifth in 22.82 and Sicurella followed in sixth at 22.91.

The Engineers kept that momentum rolling in the 400, capturing another title behind Caden Caron, who won in 50.11, while Cortez Garrett added a third-place finish in 50.25 and Steiner contributed a fourth-place effort in 50.58. Jace Lewis rounded out additional points in sixth with a time of 51.61. In the 800, Dominic Pena delivered another event win for RPI, capturing first in 1:52.84.

RPI's distance group also put together several key scoring performances. In the 1500, the Engineers earned points in both sections, led by Jack Czarnecki's win in the seeded race in 3:50.89. In the same section, Evan Lacey placed fifth (3:52.65), Danny Gall finished sixth (3:52.79), and Colin Goldschmidt took seventh (3:54.61). The unseeded 1500 saw Sam Gibbons secure a runner-up finish in 4:00.38, while Gwilym Horner added a scoring performance in eighth at 4:06.92. In the 5000, RPI added another win as Brady Geisler captured first in 15:23.20, with Nathan Fajen placing third (15:55.62) and Justin Cascio taking fourth in 15:55.76.

The Engineers also scored in the hurdles, led by Cortez Garrett who placed third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.03, while Chris Kay contributed a seventh-place finish at 15.76. RPI added another top-four result in the 400-meter hurdles as John Bellini finished fourth in 59.51. In the steeplechase, the Engineers controlled the top of the results with Michael Harkins winning the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:35.81, followed by Nicholas McAuley in second (9:36.26), Evan Morrow in third (9:42.88), and Murray Copps in fourth (9:56.18), with Ben Molino adding a sixth-place finish in 10:15.44. RPI also claimed the 4x100-meter relay title, as Caso, Myrick, Catelotti, and Stewart combined for a winning time of 41.82.

In the field events, RPI continued to rack up points, beginning in the jumps with Connor Cruz winning the high jump after clearing 1.95 meters. The Engineers also swept the top of the pole vault as Moss Dengler captured first at 4.60 meters, while Dillen Owusu tied for second with a clearance of 4.30 meters, and Jack Currie added a sixth-place result at 3.55 meters. In the long jump, RPI posted a pair of scoring marks as Ervin Owusu finished seventh with a leap of 6.62 meters, and Oliver Herrick followed in eighth at 6.59 meters. In the triple jump, Herrick earned a podium finish in third with a mark of 13.52 meters, while Evan Boyd placed fifth (12.92m) and Caius Leung finished sixth (12.68m).

The Engineers closed out the meet with strong performances in the throws. In the shot put, Tristan Mangin placed seventh with a throw of 13.39 meters, and Javier Bedoya followed in eighth at 13.16 meters. RPI then collected four top-eight finishes in the discus, led by Arthur Hrycak in fourth with a mark of 45.02 meters, followed by Jack Chappa in sixth (43.38m), Mangin in seventh (43.14m), and Henry Struble in eighth at 42.60 meters. In the hammer, Colby Grove placed third with a throw of 51.11 meters, while Max Fetah added a fourth-place result at 50.90 meters, and Paul Sussman rounded out another scoring performance in seventh (48.90m). Finally, Mangin capped an excellent day by winning the javelin with a top mark of 59.77 meters, while Lucas Heydt finished fifth (45.31m) and Ryan Stuck placed seventh at 44.47 meters.
