The St. Lawrence men's tennis team was on fire Saturday afternoon in the Newell Field House, sweeping Rensselaer, 9-0 in the opening Liberty League contest of the year. The Saints improve to a 6-3 mark, while the Engineers earn their first loss of the season to make their record 0-1.
St. Lawrence played outstanding in doubles competition, holding Rensselaer to two points or less in each match. The duo of junior Tony Wilkey and first-year Philip Jackley shut out
Matthew Asher and
Patrick Russo, 8-0 in the number one match, while senior Chris McDonald and junior Ren Gates followed suit at number two with an 8-2 victory against
Evan Creer and
Kyle Borton. The senior tandem of Christopher Tamm and Chris Rodilosso finished out the doubles' sweep with an 8-0 win over
James Fitzgerald and
Adam Generale.
The Saints also stood out in singles play, with three first-years shutting out their opponents, while the rest held the Engineers with two points or less. Michael Hayden, Jackley and Adam Gerber all won their matches 6-0, 6-0. Hayden topped Creer in the number one spot, while Jackley defeated
Alex Franz at number three and Gerber dropped Borton at number four.
Wilkey also had an impressive match in the number two position, defeating Asher, 6-0, 6-1, as McDonald followed suit, defeating
Kenny Weiand by the same amount. St. Lawrence's Gates secured the shut out when he outplayed Generale, 6-0, 6-2.
