Women's Lacrosse Beaten by #1 Hamilton in League Semifinals

Engineers fall to Continentals, 12-3

CLINTON, N.Y. - Hamilton scored six goals in both halves and the Continentals, the top-ranked team in the nation, defeated the Rensselaer women's lacrosse team, 12-3, in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament.  Hamilton improves to 17-0 overall - and extends its home winning streak to 35 games.  RPI, which was making its first appearance in the tournament, finishes its season with an 8-6 record. 

Rachel Friedman '13 scored four goals to lead Hamilton, the tournament's No. 1 seed which advances to Saturday's championship game for the fifth straight year. The Continentals have won the title in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Liz Rave '10 chipped in three goals and three draw controls, Hilary Saverin '10 had two and Sarah Bray '11 posted one goal, two assists and five ground balls for the winners. Kate Fowler '10 needed to make just two saves in goal.

Emma Albert '12, Shannon Maguire '13 and Whitney Kukol '10 scored one goal each for Rensselaer (8-6). Ariana Hood '10 started in goal and made seven saves and Allie Arnal '13 stopped two shots in 19:30 minutes in relief of Hood. Tracy Breslin '11 led all players with six ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Kukol gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead just 1 minute, 52 seconds into the first half. The Continentals took the lead for good with four straight goals, including two by Saverin. Rave's first goal of the afternoon made the score 4-1 with 18:51 left.

Albert's free-position goal with 11:50 remaining pulled Rensselaer within 4-2, but the Engineers didn't score again until midway through the second half. Hamilton took control with a 7-0 run that spanned the rest of the first half and nearly 16 minutes of the second. Hamilton led 6-2 at the half and 11-2 with 19:31 left. Libby Schultz '12 put the finishing touches on the Continentals' victory with her 24th goal of the year with 2:11 remaining.

Hamilton enjoyed the advantage in shots (30-6) and draw controls (13-4), and held a 25-21 edge in ground balls.
