TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team of 1960-61 will be honored the weekend of January 28-29 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the team's trip to the Frozen Four. The Engineers finished with a 16-5-1 record and was fourth in the nation that season.

To date 16 of the 24 members of that team, which was coached by the legendary Ned Harkness, are expected to return to Troy at the end of the month. All returnees will be part of an on-ice ceremony during the first intermission of the 34th Annual Big Red Freakout! between RPI and Yale on January 29.

“We are thrilled to welcome back one of the greatest teams to ever wear the Cherry and White of RPI for the 50th anniversary of their accomplishment,” said current head coach Seth Appert. “Making it to the Frozen Four is something our current student-athletes are striving for and they are excited to meet our alumni who have helped build the great tradition of Engineers Hockey.”

Among Rensselaer's 16 victories was a streak of 10 consecutive wins and a stretch of 15-1-1 in a span of 17 games. The Engineers averaged over six goals per game (6.13), while allowing only 3.00 goals against over the course of the season.

Trevor Kaye (Toronto, ON), a junior, led the team in scoring with 50 points on 24 goals and 26 assists – also team-highs – in 22 games. Classmate John Chiarelli (Ottawa, ON) notched 20 goals and 24 assists for 44 points, while captain Jim Josephson (Cannington, ON), also a junior, had 43 points (20 goals, 23 assists). Two players notched at least 30 points, while two others had more than 20 points.

Junior Stu Benton (Longmeadow, MA) played 20 games in goal, posting a 15-4-1 record with a 2.77 goals against average and an .892 save percentage. He registered the team's only shutout.

The Engineers played their first game of the Frozen Four, which was held in Denver, against Tri-State League foe St. Lawrence University, losing 6-3. (It was the third loss of the year to SLU.) RPI then faced the University of Minnesota in the third place game, falling 4-3 to the Gophers. The one-goal loss was the fourth such defeat of the year for Rensselaer.
