Jarrett Regier won at the first flight in both singles and doubles action, but it wasn't enough as the Rensselaer men's tennis team was edged by Hobart, 5-4, in the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament. The Statesmen move to 10-9 on the year, while the Engineers drop to 7-8.
Hobart, which came in as the #3 seed, moves on to the next round, facing #2 Vassar at 2pm. Rensselaer, the #6 seed in this year's tournament, will play in the fifth place game beginning at 4pm against #5 seed Union. The Dutchmen lost 6-3 to host and #4 seed St. Lawrence this morning.
Regier (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) claimed victory at first singles by a 6-0, 3-3 margin. The match was retired before the conclusion of the second set. With that victory, he moves to 12-1 on the season at his flight. Along with partner
Patrick Russo (East Northport, NY/Northport), Regier also posted his ninth first fligth doubles victory of the year as the pair improved to 9-4.
Other victors in Saturday's morning action included rookie
James Kim (Jacksonville, FL/Taxon School for Advanced Studies), who won a retired match at fourth singles by a 6-0, 5-1 margin. Senior
Adam General (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Ardsley) also won in his flight, claiming a win in fifth singles by a 6-1, 4-0 margin. That match was also retired.
