TROY, N.Y. - SUNY New Paltz scored singles goals in both halves and the Hawks held Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) off the scoreboard in posting a 2-0 victory in a non-league game at Harkness Field. New Paltz improves to 9-4, while RPI falls to 6-5. It was the first time in the last 19 games the Engineers have been shutout.
The visiting Hawks controlled much of the play in the first half and they held an 11-2 advantage in shots in the opening stanza. RPI sophomore
Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) thwarted their first scoring attempt with a defensive save at 22:36, but New Paltz sustained the pressure. Junior Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, NJ/Whippany Park) broke the scoreless tie at 31:04 when she scored her third of the season on a low shot from just inside the circle. Her marker came soon after the Hawks hit posts on consecutive shots.
New Paltz doubled the lead early in the second half when junior Lauren Link (Hauppauge, NY/Smithtown West) finished a penalty corner with a goal. Freshman Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) earned an assist on the play, which marked Link's third of the year.
Rensselaer had a solid chance to cut the lead in half 15 minutes into the second frame when sophomore
Liana Viaggio (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) broke in on the the goalie, Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, NY/Suffern), but her shot was kicked out of harm's way.
Pjetri finished with two saves while
Hannah Clough (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional) had three stops for the Engineers, who held a 9-4 edge in shots in the second half.
Rensselaer is back on the field on Saturday in a Liberty League game at St. Lawrence University at 3pm. New Paltz hosts Vassar College on Friday at 4pm in a non-league affair.
