CANTON, N.Y. - The Rensselaer field hockey team got two goals from
Liana Viaggio and a goal and two assists from
Holly Dupuis and the Engineers held off St. Lawrence, 4-3 in a Liberty League contest. With the win RPI (7-4; 3-1) moves into second place in the league standings, just one game out of first. The Saints fall to 2-11 and 1-4.
Viaggio (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac) and Dupuis (Brookfield, MA / Worcester Academy) combined at 4:23 to put Rensselaer ahead, 1-0. Dupuis sent a pass from the right side to Viaggio, who buried it from 10 feet in front of the goal. St. Lawrence answered when Courtney Cartier scored her first of three goals on the day at 8:18.
The Engineers stormed back with the next three goals, including another Dupuis to Viaggio combination. This time Viaggio, the reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Year, swept in a Dupuis pass from the left side at 25:01. Dupuis, a senior, made it 3-1 3:31 later with an unassisted goal off a rebound. Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford) scored unassisted with 20 minutes remaining for a three-goal cushion.
Cartier cut it to 4-2 within 7:50 of Hutchinson's marker and then scored on a fast break with Ali Ferenczy with under two minutes remaining.
RPI held a 21-17 advantage in shots, but St. Lawrence was awarded four more penalty corners (11-7) than the Engineers.
Sophomore
Hannah Clough (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional) made nine saves for the win and Brady Cooper stopped 10 shots in the loss.
