SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Senior
Taylor Wetherby dropped a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to clinch the Liberty League Semifinal for Rensselaer's golf team as the Engineers defeated Rochester, 3-2, in a match-play match at Saratoga State Park. Second-seeded RPI advances to face top-seeded Skidmore on Sunday at 11:30am for the title and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.
Wetherby provided the heroics in dramatic fashion in defeating Will Malia, 1-up. Mallia was 6-down after nine holes, but came back to square the match on the 17th hole. Both players put their ensuing drives in the fairway on 18. Wetherby hit his approach to within 5 feet after Mallia put his second shot on the green, approximately 25 feet from the hole. Mallia missed his long birdie putt before Wetherby sank his to win it.
In the other action between the Engineers and third-seeded Yellowjackets saw Rensselaer junior
Grant Rosener win, 1-up, while senior
Matt Lussier was victorious, 2 and 1.
Skidmore advanced by defeating fourth-seeded Clarkson, 4-0.
