Field Hockey Winning Streak Snapped at Three

TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Karlee Henderson had a goal and an assist to lead the Rowan University field hockey team to a 3-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at Harkness Field. The Profs improve to 7-3, while the Engineers fall to 5-3. RPI saw its winning streak snapped at three games.

With the score tied, 1-1, at halftime, Rowan sustained pressure for much of the second half and were finally rewarded at 58:09 when senior Kelsey O'Neill (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scored her second goal of the season on a long drive off a penalty corner. Senior Erin Bernat (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) earned the assist on the goal, whch was aided by a screen by Kellie Campbell (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson), who was directly in front of the RPI goalie.

Henderson (Elmer, NJ/Woodstown) added a goal, her fourth, with just 35 seconds left, with an assist to Amy McKeever (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) to seal the victory for the Profs.

The Engineers got the first goal of the game when sophomore Liana Viaggio (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) finished a feed from senior Carlie Newcomb (Southwick, MA/Southwick Tolland Regional) at the 17:55 mark. Newcomb picked up a loose ball to the right of the cage and passed the ball to Viaggio, who was cutting to the middle, where she collected the pass and shot in one motion for her fourth goal of the year.

Rowan tied the score late in the first half when Campbell, the team's leading scorer, flipped a shot into the goal from approximately six yards out. The goal was her eighth of the season. Henderson set up the shot and earned the assist on the goal, which came at 32:26.

The Profs held a 25-11 advantage in shots in the game, including 17-3 in the second half. They also had an edge in penalty corners, 16-6.

Senior Jen Goldberg (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made five saves in the win, while RPI sophomore Hanna Clough (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional) stopped seven shots.

RPI returns to action on Wednesday for a non-league game at Utica College (7pm). Rowan plays at SUNY New Paltz in a non-league contest on Sunday at noon.
