Dupuis scores twice with an assist in victory

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior Holly Dupuis scored twice and assisted on another goal to lead the Rensselaer field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Hartwick in a non-league game. The Engineers improve to 1-1, while the Hawks fall to 0-2.

RPI got out to the lead at 15:58 when senior Carlie Newcomb (Southwick, MA / Southwick Tolland Regional) scored her first goal of the season. Sophomore Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford) doubled the lead nine minutes later when she scored off a penalty corner, which was set up by Dupuis (Brookfield, MA / Worcester Academy). The goal was the team-leading third of the season for Hutchinson and the Engineers led, 2-0 at halftime.

Sophomore Lianna Viaggio (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac), the reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Year, put the visitors ahead by three goals 13 minutes into the second half and Dupuis deposited the next two goals for a 5-0 edge. Her first came at 55:35 and her second was at the 63:21. Hartwick got one goal back, off the stick of Katie Lonsky with approximately seven minutes left in the second half.

Sophomore Hannah Clough (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional) earned the win for RPI by stopping three shots, while Megan Campbell made eight saves for Hartwick.

Rensselaer held a 19-6 advantage in shots and a 12-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Engineers return to the field on Sunday when they travel to St. John Fisher for a 1pm start. The Hawks go to St. Lawrence on Saturday for a 12pm contest.
