TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team scored a power play goal, a shorthanded goal and killed of all seven Dartmouth College power plays on its way to a 2-1 win in an ECAC Hockey women's game at Houston Field House. RPI improves to 6-11-2 overall and 4-5-0 in the league. The Big Green are now 7-5-2 and 3-4-1.

Sophomore Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals) backstopped the victory, making 26 saves, including 15 with her team shorthanded. Seven of those stops, and 13 overall, came in the third period. The win was the fourth straight for her and the team.

Following a scoreless first period, the Engineers got on the board at 7:19 of the second period when senior captain Taylor Horton (St. Thomas, ON / Bluewater Hawks) scored a shorthanded goal. After a Dartmouth faceoff win, Horton stole the puck, skated down the left side of the ice on a 2-on-1 with Jordan Smelker (Anchorage, AK / Team Alaska 19U) and shot and scored from the left faceoff circle.

Freshman Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ / New Jersey) put RPI ahead 2-0 with a power play goal at 14:43 of the middle frame. The forward jammed in a rebound of a Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA / Washington Pride) shot from just outside the crease. Kathryn Schilter (Aurora, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) had the secondary assist for the Engineers.

Dartmouth had several strong chances in the second period, collecting six shots on three power play opportunities. Rensselaer was 1 for 2 with the extra skater in the period.

The Big Green pulled to within one goal 6:39 into the third period when senior captain Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, NJ / Hotchkiss School) beat O'Brien on a rebound from the bottom of the right faceoff circle. Catherine Berghuis (Truro, NS / Mississauga Colts) and Morgan Illikainen (Grand Rapids, MN / G.R. Greenway Lightning), both of whom had shots stopped in the flurry, earned the assists.

Dartmouth pulled netminder Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, PA / U19 Team Pittsburgh) for the extra skater for 1:24 to close the game, but could not get even. Holdcroft finished with 20 saves.

The Engineers, who were 1 for 3 on the power play, are back home on Saturday afternoon when they host No. 4 Harvard University at 4pm. Dartmouth skates at Union College on Saturday afternoon. That game also begins at 4pm.
