CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In its first dual match of the season, the RPI men's tennis team dropped a tight one to MIT, 5-4. Rensselaer won once in doubles and three times in singles in the loss.
Brandon Mazzara and
McKinley Grimes won in the No.2 doubles spot by a score of 8-2, but the top tandem,
Jarrett Regier and
Matt LaBarre, lost to Edwin Zhang and fellow senior Curtis Wu, 8-4 victory at No.1. At No.3, MIT's Kenny Gea and Dennis Garcia defeated
Will Dickie and
Sherman Uyeno, 8-2.
At No.1 singles, LaBarre defeated Zhang in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. In the No.2 position, Kevin Wang won a close matchup against Regier, winning the first set, 6-2, and winning a tiebreaker, 2-0, to narrowly win the second by a score of 7-6. Gea defeated Mazzara at No.3, 6-2, 6-1.
Wu closed out the MIT singles wins with a victory over Dickie at No.4 by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Jeffrey Sperling fell to Grimes won at No.5 by a score of 6-3, 7-5 and
Anthony Kim earned a 6-5, 6-1 win at No.6.
RPI returns to the court on Saturday afternoon at Babson.
