TROY, NY -- Lizzy Saward scored a goal and added an assist to lead St. Lawrence to a 2-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers fall to 3-7 overall, and 0-4 in league play, while the Saints move to 3-6, and 1-1 in conference action. The game was the first of Saturday's Homecoming and Reunion Weekend for RPI.
The Engineers controlled most of the action, outshooting St. Lawrence, 26-8, in the game, while also holding a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners. Despite the strong offensive showing by the Engineers, they were unable to capitalize and find the back of the cage, as they were held scoreless for the fourth time this season.
The Saints made the best of the few shots they had, as Saward (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington) scored St. Lawrence's first goal in the 15th minute of play, taking an assist from Carly Dziekan (Yorkville, NY/New York Mills). The score held for the remainder of the first half, and the Saints held off the rallying Engineers, doubling the score late in the second half on a goal from Kara Pelosi (Medfield, MA/Medfield). On a penalty corner, Saward passed the ball out to Ali Ferenczy (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), who took a hard shot towards the goal, where the ball was redirected by Pelosi into the back of the cage.
Rensselaer goalkeeper
Hannah Clough (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) made five saves between the pipes for the Engineers, while Nicole Matos (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) anchored the St. Lawrence defense, stopping all 15 of RPI's shots on goal.
RPI will return to action on Wednesday, hosting non-conference opponent Utica at 7pm under the lights at Harkness Field.
