TROY, NY -- Senior
Kierstan Ryan scored the gamewinner in the second half to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 2-1 win over Oneonta State in the 2013 field hockey season finale on Saturday afternoon at Harkness Field. Ryan and her fellow senior classmates were honored prior to the start of the game.
RPI took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by
Hana Murphy (Westport, MA/Tilton School). Ryan, who got the assist on the score, passed the ball to Murphy from the middle of the circle, and Ryan knocked it into the back of the cage at 17:37. Ryan (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) got herself into the scoring column in the second half, scoring her first goal of the season off an assist from
Claire Cecilio (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty). Cecilio took a hard shot from the top of the circle, and Ryan managed to get her stick on the ball to redirect it into the back of the cage just before the 42-minute mark.
Oneonta avoided the shutout with a goal in the second half. Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) scored on an initial shot off a penalty corner attempt, getting the insertion pass from Andrea Day (Greene, NY/Greene) in the 45th minute. The Red Dragons had a chance to tie it up late in the game, as Stephanie Fiske (Marathon, NY/Marathon Central) took a penalty stroke, but Rensselaer goalkeeper
Hannah Clough (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) came up with the big save to preserve the Engineer victory.
RPI outshot Oneonta, 15-6, in the game, and held a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners. Clough made three saves for the Engineers in the game, while Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak, NY/Lakeland) stopped four opposing shots for Red Dragons.
The Engineers wrap up the season at 8-9 overall, while Oneonta moves to 12-7 on the year.
