HAMILTON, NY –
Kelly O'Brien recorded 28 saves in goal to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 3-0 victory over Colgate in ECAC women's hockey action on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Engineers move to 3-7-1 overall and 2-2-0 in league play, while the Raiders drop to 3-9-0 with a 1-5-0 conference record.
Rensselaer got on the board in the first period with a power play goal from Laura Harwood (Belleville, ON / Durham West Lightning) at 12:02.
Jordan Smelker (Anchorage, AK / Team Alaska 19U) and
Kathryn Schilter (Aurora, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) assisted on the tally. The Engineers doubled their advantage just 3:09 into the second period, as Lindsey Hwyla (Cary, NC / Gilmore Academy) got her stick on the puck in a scrum in front of the net.
Katie Rooney (Buffalo, MN / Buffalo High School)and
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ / New Jersey Rockets) were credited with assists.
Colgate had two power play opportunities early in the second, but the Raiders were unable to convert.
Mari Mankey (Coon Rapids, MN / Hopkins) extended the RPI advantage to 3-0 with an additional goal in the second, with assists from
Brandi Banks (Burlington, ON / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) and Hwyla. The Engineers were called for three straight penalties to end the second, including one that extended into the third period, but Colgate was unable to captialize on any of the power play opportunities.
Colgate outshot Rensselaer, 28-21. O'Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals) held off a barrage of shots in the third period, as the Raiders got 11 shots on goal in the stanza. Brittney Brooks (Las Vegas, NV / Dakota Ridge) posted 18 saves in the loss for Colgate.
The Engineers return to action on Friday, hosting Yale at Houston Field House at 4pm.
