TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Jason Kasdorf has earned multiple year-end ECAC Hockey honors. The freshman goaltender was chosen by the coaches as the Rookie of the Year as well as to the All-ECAC Hockey Second Team and the league's All-Rookie Team.
A National Hockey League draft choice of the Winnipeg Jets, Kasdorf has a 14-5-2 overall record, a 1.62 goals against average and a .935 save percentage. His goals against average is on pace to set the school's single season record, which was set by Joel Laing '00 in 1999-00 (1.82), and he could finish with the second highest save percentage, behind Laing's .947, which was also established in 1999-00.
Kasdorf, who played each of the last 16 games since returning from an injury, is currently fourth in the nation in goals against average, sixth in save percentage, seventh in winning percentage (.714) and 14th in shutouts.
In 17 league contests, Kasdorf was 12-2-2 with a 1.39 average, a .945 percentage and three shutouts.
He allowed two-or-fewer goals in 19 of the 23 games he played and did not give up more than three in any contest. The Winnipeg, Man., native had five games with at least 30 saves, including a season-high 36 in a 6-1 win at nationally-ranked Yale University in early December.
Kasdorf was especially sharp in February when he led the Engineers to a 7-1-0 record with a 1.48 goals against average and a .940 save percentage. He only allowed 12 goals - just six at even strength - on 200 shots in 485.38. He had two shutouts.
This season he has earned numerous honors. He has been the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week twice, the Rookie of the Week three times, the Rookie of the Month once and the Goaltender of the Month once. Kasdorf has also garnered the Hockey Commissioners Association national Rookie of the Month award once.
He joined the Engineers after playing for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) last season. In 2011-12 he was 10-16-3 with a 2.75 goals against average and a .913 save percentage in 35 contests.
Rensselaer has had four league Rookie of the Year Award winners in its past, most recently Jerry D'Amigo in the 2009-10 season. Bob Brinkworth was the first in 1961-62, followed by Don Cutts, who won the award 10 years later. George Servinis earned the honor in 1982-83.
