MAHWAH, N.J. - Senior Kelsey Porter (Quechee, VT / Hartford) scored twice and three others had single goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Ramapo in the season opener for both teams. Sarah Krolus (Westminster, MD / Garrison Forest School), Molly Shanahan (Rye, NH / Phillips Exeter Academy) and Colleen Fowler (Acton, MA / Acton Boxborough) also scored for the Engineers, who got four saves from Hannah Clough (Acton, MA / Acton Boxborough). RPI outshot Ramapo, 18-3.
RPI got on the board in first when Porter took a pass from Angela Cascio (Wyndmoor, PA / Springside School) with 30:19 on the clock. Fowler gave the Engineers a 2-0 advantage with 23:25 left to play, before Molly Shanahan put in an insurance goal with 18 flat to go.
The Roadrunners closed the gap with 9:26 left to play in the half when rookie Nicole Healy hit the back of the cage off a dish from Danisleydis Hernandez. Krolus put the Engineers up, 4-1 before the halftime buzzer.
RPI outshot the Roadrunners, 8-2 while Clough went untested in the first 35 minutes of play.
Ramapo held the Engineers to just one goal in the second half that came at the 46:07 minute mark from Porter, her second of the game.
RPI took 10 second half shots and held the Roadrunners to just four.
