Men's Indoor Track Opens With Win at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) indoor track & field teams began the 2014 season at the Bowdoin January Invitational, where the Engineers' men finished first and the women were second. The RPI men compiled 269 points to defeat Bowdoin College (173), the host, and Connecticut College (62 points). Rensselaer's women's team had 163 points, which was second to Bowdoin (249), but ahead of Conn. College (62).

The Engineers had 11 winners on the men's side and four on the women's. They also had 13 who finished in second place, including nine men.

Among those who finished first was senior Zac Borrelli, who captured the shot put (14.77 meters) and the weight throw (15.99 meters). Classmate Sam Ellis won the heptathlon (4384 points), while fellow senior Stephen Silber was first in the high jump (1.98 meters). Silber, who participated in the NCAA Championship Meet last year in the high jump, also finished second in the long jump (6.07 meters) and fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.2).

Sophomore James Willy won the 60-meter event with a time of 7.0 to lead five RPI victors on the track. Senior Neba Ayuk Ebott won the 400 meter dash (52.6), Joey Correia crossed first in the 200 meter dash (23.7), freshman Ben Mason won the 600 meter run (1:25.5) and his classmate, Isaac Ocana was first in the 60 meter hurdles (8.9).

Rensselaer's women who finished first included two individuals. Senior Grace Tilton won the 1000 meter run in a time of 3:00.3 and Lydia Frangos, who won the weight throw with a distance of 16.48 meters. 

Freshman Victoria Buehler had two of RPI's four runner-up finishes. She ran a 9.9 in the 60 meter hurdles and had a 10.50 in the high jump.

Both women's and men's teams compete in New York City on January 18 in the Ramapo College Indoor Select.
