SPRINGFIELD, MASS. -- Led by strong showings by the field competitors, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track and field team finished first at the Springfield College Indoor Meet, scoring 112 total points. The Engineer women's squad finished seventh of 11 teams at the event.
RPI had four individual victories on the men's side.
Tyler Yeastedt won the shot put competition with a throw of 49-feet, 9.75-inches, while teammate Zachary Borreli was second with a distance of 47-feet, 4.5-inches. Yeastedt also finished second in the weight throw (51-feet, 3-inches), which was won by the Engineers'
Devan Hayes with a toss of 51-feet, 5-inches. Borreli helped RPI sweep the top three in the event by recording a throw of 49-feet, 6.25-inches.
The other two Engineer wins came on the track, as
Ben Mason crossed the finish line first in the 600m run in a time of 1:24.21, and
Tyler Gumina was first in the 1,000m run in 2:41.02. Joseph Livote was just behind Gumina to take second, in a time of 2:41.04.
Also helping Rensselaer was a second-place showing by
Stephen Silber in the high jump (6-feet, 4-inches), and a third-place finish by
Alden Chaisson in the pole vault (13-feet, 7.25-inches).
Benjamin Fazio crossed the line third in the mile in 4:32.23, while Samuel Ellis placed third in the 60m hurdles in 8.75 seconds.
The women's team recorded one individual win, as
Lydia Frangos claimed the top spot in the weight throw with a toss of 55-feet, 2.25-inches. Teammate
Ivy Muchuma placed third in the event with a throw of 51-feet, 4.5-inches. Muchuma was also third in the shot put, recording a throw of 39-feet, 1-inch.
On the track,
Loki Rasmussen finished second in the 1,000m run in a time of 3:17.64.
Emily Stickles finished fifth in the mile (5:39.61), while
Vicky Buehler was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 34-feet, 2.75-inches.
Both men's and women's programs will return to action on Feb. 1, at Dartmouth College.
