The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) department of athletics mourns the loss of Athletics Hall of Famer Robert W. "Bobby" Fox '55, of West Lafayette, Indiana. The former goaltender who backstopped the Engineers to the 1954 NCAA Championship, died on January 25.
A native of Verdun, Quebec, Fox played in all but one of the Engineers' games during the national title season, notching a 3.14 goals against average and a save percentage of .892 percent. He had six shutouts in 1954, his junior year, including over Michigan State, Hamilton, Springfield, Northeastern, Middlebury, and Carleton. He was an All-East First Team selection and selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team that season. He earned All-East Second Team as a senior.
He was inducted into the Rensselaer Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978.
A mechanical engineering major, Fox went on to be a professor in Purdue University's School of Mechanical Engineering, eventually being named a Professor Emeritus.
