RPI Drops ECAC Contest to St. Lawrence, 4-2

TROY, N.Y. -- Three power play goals, including the gamewinner by Dayle Wilkinson, helped St. Lawrence to a 4-2 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in women's ECAC Hockey action on Friday evening at Houston Field House. With the loss, the Engineers fall to 10-14-2 overall, with a 6-8-1 mark in ECAC play, while St. Lawrence improves to 8-14-3 and 7-5-3 in conference action.

The Saints kicked off the scoring at 4:20 of the first period as Ellie Williams (Pryor, OK) took assists from Margo Lund (White Bear Lake, MN) and Mel Desrochers (Welland, ON) on what would prove to be St. Lawrence's only even-handed goal of the evening. Rensselaer tied the game at 1-1 at 7:17 with a tally by Jordan Smelker (Anchorage, AK / Team Alaska 19U). Ali Svoboda (Arlington Heights, IL / Chicago Mission) and Kathryn Schilter (Aurora, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) assisted on the goal.

Both teams would score once more before the conclusion of the first period, with only power play goals remaining. St. Lawrence regained the lead at 10:51 on a tally by Brooke Webster (Aurora, ON) from Kayla Raniwsky (Windsor, ON) and Kirsten Pedalis (Farmington, MI) before the Engineers knotted the game up once again at 2-all at 14:38. Mari Mankey (Hopkins, MN / Hopkins) connected top shelf on an assist from Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA / Washington Pride) while RPI was on the power play.

St. Lawrence scored twice in the second period to set the final score. Wilkinson (Stouffville, ON) netted the gamewinner at 13:34 to put the Saints up by one. Desrochers notched her second assist of the game, while Rylee Smith (Hagersville, ON) picked up the second helper on the goal. The Saints sealed the win with a goal from Pedalis with one second left to play in the period on another power play opportunity, getting assists from Dominique Korakianitis (London, ON) and Webster.

The teams skated to a scoreless third period, despite five combined power play opportunities. Rensselaer held a slight shot advantage in the game, 26-22, , while St. Lawrence won the battle in the faceoff circle, claiming 35 of 60 attempts. Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals) played two full periods for the Engineers in the net, making 11 saves, while Brianna Piper (Oakville, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) finished with 17:57 between the pipes in the third period, stopping all seven shots faced. Carmen MacDonald (Pictou/ NS) saw a full game in goal for St. Lawrence, making 24 saves.

Rensselaer will return to action on Saturday, hosting ECAC foe Clarkson at 4 p.m.
