CLERMONT, Fla. - Junior
Jamie Wakefield scored a game-high five goals, including the only two in overtime, and the No. 16 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team defeated Haverford College, 13-11, in a game played in Central Florida. RPI is now 1-2, while the Fords fall to 3-2.
Trailing by a goal with the clock winding down in regulation, Rensselaer junior
Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY / Clarkstown South) scored an unassisted goal with only 11 seconds remaining. From there, Wakefield (Windsor, CT / Windsor) completed the come-from-behind victory with goals at 1:44 and 58 seconds remaining in the extra session. She now has team-highs of eight goals and 10 points in the first three games.
Haverford opened the game with the first two goals before the Engineers scored three straight, by three different student-athletes. After the Fords tied it at 3-3, senior
Michelle Denny (Lusby, MD / Patuxent) scored her second goal of the contest for a 4-3 lead with 13:21 left in the first half. Haverford answered with the next two tallies, before Riley scored her first of the contest. Megan Gallagher gave the Fords a 6-5 lead with her third goal of the game, but
Rachel Scofield (Albany, NY / Colonie) answered at 2:10 and the score was tied at 6-6 at halftime.
The Engineers scored three of the first four goals of the second half, by Riley, Wakefield and Scofield, but Haverford notched four of the next five - including three from Diana Perry - for an 11-10 lead late in the fourth quarter. Riley's fourth of the year forced the extra session.
Wakefield also had an assist to go with her five goals, while Riley had three goals. Scofield scored twice with two assists and Denny had two goals and one assist. Junior
Erin Amarello (Griswold, CT / St. Bernard School) stopped five shots for the win in the cage for RPI, which held a 28-19 edge in shots.
Gallagher and Perry both had three goals for the Fords, who got eight saves from Shannon Horn.
Rensselaer makes its home debut on Tuesday afternoon at 5pm against No. 3 Middlebury College at Renwyck Field. The game is a rematch of last season's NCAA Quarterfinals matchup, which the Panthers won on their home field, 10-8.
